Udine's most important event, in 16-19 September 2010
"Friuli DOC" is a 3-day open-air food-and-wine festival which takes place every year in September in Udine.
It is a showcase of quality products which are all "Made in Friuli"
The entire city center of Udine (which will be closed to traffic) will fill up with kiosks, tables, stalls displaying all the superb products from this land of farmers, artisans, scholars and artists.
There are fine wines and grappas, air-cured ham from San Daniele and Sauris, Montasio cheese, traditional gubana cakes, honey, bread, artistic ceramics and textiles, wood products, wrought iron, sophisticated jewellery, books and many more.
Visitors come in great numbers and have a tremendous time eating, drinking, strolling around observing everything and enjoying the shows put on by folklore groups, bands, comedians and other attractions for young and old.
The best of Friuli. Lovely monuments in the Autumn light, mild temperatures, people flooding out in the streets…There is a festival. People stop at kiosks, taste specialities of local cuisine, drink the excellent wines of this land…
While strolling around you will notice traditional handicrafts, admire the various stalls, meet other people.
This land feels proud of itself. Tourists here are happy to discover a city that does not show off but is rich in values. And they taste “frico”, “polenta”, pork meat, but also Austrian dishes in the stands of neighbouring Carinthia and Steiermark (Styria).
People meet friends, say “mandi” to each other, enjoy ice-creams, an apple pancake and have a coffee in S. Giacomo Square, then walk up to the Castle Hill where the flag with the eagle – emblem of Friuli – sways gently in the breeze.
